Since i ever known the tildeverse and what does it stand for , now i'm feeling to be part of it , running my own public-access unix-like server.
Software to be used
* dovecot,postfix - E-mail * geomyidae - Gopher server * molly-brown - Gemini server * nginx - Web server * openssh - for SSH access * prosody - Jabber/XMPP server * uacme - for TLS certificates
What's stopping me right now
Domain names
Getting a domain name is literally a mess. I'll probably use either FreeDNS or DDNS services (like anondns or no-ip)
Hosting
I think I could either revive some old computers of mine to be used as servers (though homehosting on my case is very unlikely to happen) , or use my school's server which is currently sort of in a non-operational state (nobody seems to maintain it)
I do own wireless routers, but they are inoperative. No clue on where to place them and stuff like that, also I've no internet connection of my own.
There's also VPS (virtual private servers) as an option but how the fuck I'm supposed to pay for one? I don't have money
Update #1 : Apparently my school would allow me access to their server (which is a very weird rack) by being their sysadmin, a dream come true? not sure, but lol Update #2: 2021-07-29 I'd need a name for this project, so I can remember it as such, also updated literally most of the blog post. Update #3: 2021-11-10 Almost the whole post was rewritten, also, setting up things over i2p and tor is actually quite easy to do when compared to clearnet. Update #4: 2022-01-24 Reserved tilde.nya.pub subdomain on FreeDNS. And some people told me about IRCNow[1] and anyone can get a free VPS by joining them. I gotta start small first :D
